Birthdays: Hugh (November 4), Martha (September 10)
Anniversary: September 9, 1967
Family: Ginger, Brian, Kevin.  All grown and living in the USA.

Relationship to SVBC: Home church:  Martha grew up in SVBC and her parents Will and Dot Gemmel were long-term members. Hugh and Martha were married at SVBC.

Primary Ministry Focus: Training and supervising literacy teachers for the Ambo-Pasco Quechua language.  Organizing workshops, overseeing DVBS and Women of the Bible classes, and acting as a resource for the Literacy Team.  Assisting in the preparation of radio programs and reading materials in the Quechua language.

The People: Peru is a Spanish-speaking country, but many of the indigenous people in the Andes Mountains speak one of the Quechua languages as their first language. There are over 20 different Quechua languages plus about 40 jungle languages in Peru . The Bible and/or the NT and other literature are available in most of the jungle languages and some of the Quechua languages, but many of the people are illiterate.  There is a growing interest in the people to learn to read and write in Quechua, especially in the churches.

Ministry Experience: Hugh and Martha spent their first years of ministry in Colombia , learning the Ica language, developing literacy materials and working on translating the Scriptures.  They had to leave before the project was completed because of the resistance of the people to outsiders and especially to the Scriptures.  They moved to Dallas where Hugh worked for many years in the Wycliffe Intercultural office teaching and orienting prospective translators and teaching intercultural communications.  In 1999 Hugh and Martha went to Peru to work with the Quechua translation team in training and overseeing the literacy.

Hugh and Martha now reside in Dallas, where they continue to work for Wycliffe, serving as part of the management training team, orienting new managers in team building and communication.

Praise and Prayer Reminders: Praise for all of our dear Quechua friends who continue to serve the Lord with their God-given skills and gifts and for God's wisdom to stay focused n the ministry He has given them.

  • Praise God for His blessings: Wycliffe colleagues and resources, good health, a good car, Mom’s good health, our many faithful partners (you)!
